What is blepharoplasty?

People mostly undergo blepharoplasty because they might have droopy upper and lower eyelids, sagging eyebrows, bags under the eyes and wrinkles. It is a type of surgery in which the doctor removes excess skin, fat and muscles.

Besides making you look older, sagging skin around your eyes also might influence your vision especially the upper and outer parts of your field of vision.

Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate your vision difficulties and make your eyes appear younger.

You may undergo blepharoplasty at the same time as another procedure, for example: brow lift, face-lift or skin resurfacing.

A blepharoplasty is usually performed if you have issues with:

  • Excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin of the upper eyelids that may influence your vision

Lower lid blepharoplasty is almost always done just for cosmetic reasons while upper eye lid blepharoplasty can be done for both cosmetic and recovering reasons.

Diagnosis

If you are having surgery on both eyelids, surgeons tend to start operating the upper eyelid and then continuous with the lower eyelid. They make a cut in your eyelid to take out excess skin, muscle and fat, afterwards the cut is closed.

If you are having surgery on the lower eyelid, the surgeon makes a cut just below the lashes and removes or redistributes fat, muscle and sagging skin. Afterwards, he closes the cut.

If your upper eyelid droops close to your pupil, blepharoplasty is often treated with a procedure called ptosis which provides more support to the eyebrow muscle.

Before scheduling blepharoplasty, you will meet a plastic surgeon and ophthalmologist to discuss your medical history and your expectations.

Before the surgery you will undergo:

  • A physical  examination which may include testing your tear production and measuring parts of your eyelids.
  • A vision examination
  • Eyelid photography’s that will help planning the surgery

For international patients, it is recommended to provide us these examinations and results to determine if a preliminary examination in Belgium is necessary.

Blepharoplasty treatment and procedure

Before

Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting. You will be injected with numbing medication into your eyelid and intravenous medications to help you relax.

After

You will spend some time in the recovery room, but you can leave later that day to recuperate.
You may temporarily experience some complications such as: blurred vision, watering eyes, light sensitivity, numb eyelids, pain or discomfort, swelling and bruising similar to having black eyes,…

Results

Most people express satisfaction with the result of blepharoplasty because they feel like they have a youthful appearance and are more confident about themselves than they used to be before. Scars from the surgical cut may take a few weeks to months to heal. Specialists strongly advice to protect the eyelid from sun exposure as any other thing that is exposed to the eye.
